Education Department implements new student loan aid under COVID emergency programs.
This week, the Department of Education announced that the pause on federal student loan interest and collections for defaulted loans under the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program is being expanded. The department also announced relief for borrowers with total and permanent disabilities, whose student loans have been discharged, will no longer be at risk of having those loans reinstated for lack of financial documentation during the pandemic.
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said of the FFEL program extension, “At a time when many student loan borrowers have faced economic uncertainty, we’re ensuring that relief already provided to borrowers of loans held by the Department is available to more borrowers who need the same help so they can focus on meeting their basic needs.”
Of the relief for disabled borrowers, Secretary Cardona said, ”Borrowers with total and permanent disabilities should focus on their well-being, not put their health on the line to submit earnings information during the COVID-19 emergency. Waiving these requirements will ensure no borrower who is totally and permanently disabled risks having to repay their loans simply because they could not submit paperwork.”
